Mapping Inequality: Redlining in New Deal America
This interactive map created by scholars at University of Richmond, Virginia Tech, and University of Maryland offers information and visualizations of property redlining in cities across America begun during the 1930s. It is a striking tool for helping to understand the structural factors behind generational poverty and divestment from black neighborhoods across the country. Site managers may find it particularly useful in understanding the links between municiple planning and the income levels and racial makeup of the neighborhoods in which they sell, and in offering background to vendors, shoppers, and community members on how structural factors like redlining contribute to issues in food access.
