Farm Direct Incentives Guide

Farmers Markets And Whiteness

This radio show from Indiana Public Media does a fantastic job of covering several angles on the idea of farmers markets as white spaces, including the experiences of shoppers, the structural reasons behind why there are fewer black, indigenous and people of color farmers, the ways in which the culture that gave rise to farmers markets doesn’t necessarily start out well-equipped to handle problems of racism and inaccessibility in market spaces, and why incentive programs can’t be successful if they are a market’s only gesture towards accessibility.
